Shopify Plus vs Shopify Advanced: The Break-Even Math, With Every Fee Sourced

Shopify Plus vs Shopify Advanced comes down to a $24,012 a year license gap: Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term, and Advanced is $299 a month paid yearly. On a third-party payment gateway, Plus's lower transaction fee pays that gap back at about $6.0M a year in sales (3-year term, Shopify's published fees checked October 26, 2026). That uses the 0.6% and 0.2% rates Shopify prints on its UK and Canada pages, which we assume also apply in the US. With Shopify Payments in the US, the fee case can't be worked out from public pages at all, because Shopify doesn't publish Plus card rates there.

So for most stores, Shopify Plus vs Advanced is a feature decision (custom Functions, checkout steps, expansion stores, B2B catalogs, staff limits), and the fees only settle it at high volume. This post shows the math (a small script you can run on your own numbers), the features that change what you can build, and the numbers you'll only get from a Shopify quote. If a sales rep or an agency has told you you've outgrown Advanced, the decision table near the end is the short version.

Keplaris is a Shopify development studio that builds stores, checkout customizations and integrations. Everything below is a calculation on Shopify's published fees, with no client data.

Shopify Plus vs Advanced: the difference in short

Plus costs $24,012 a year more than Advanced in license fees (3-year term against Advanced paid yearly), cuts the third-party transaction fee from 0.6% to 0.2%, and adds custom checkout logic, expansion stores and unlimited B2B catalogs. Here is the gap in eight rows, every figure read on Shopify's pages on 2026-10-26:

Our verdict: upgrade for a feature you can name (custom Functions, checkout steps, expansion stores, unlimited B2B catalogs, more than 15 staff), not for fees, unless you process about $6M or more a year through a third-party gateway (3-year term, before any variable fee). If you use Shopify Payments, get a written Plus card rate before you decide.

What each plan costs per year: every published input

On the published floor prices, Advanced costs $3,588 a year paid yearly and Plus costs $27,600 a year on a 3-year term, before any transaction fees. The table lists every input the calculator uses, where it comes from and what it means.

All rows were checked on 2026-10-26. The third-party fee is what Shopify charges on top of your gateway's own processing fees when you don't use Shopify Payments. Your gateway's fees are the same whichever Shopify plan you're on, so the calculator leaves them out.

Two Shopify rules change who pays the third-party transaction fee. Shopify's Help Center says "PayPal transactions are exempt from third-party transaction fees" when you "elect to use Shopify Payments as your primary payment provider" (third-party transaction fees). And Shopify's fees and costs page says that when you use Shopify Payments, orders paid through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments or manual methods (such as cash, cash on delivery and bank transfers) carry no third-party fee.

Traced example: a $5M store on a third-party gateway

Take one hypothetical store (not a client) doing $5M a year through a third-party gateway. On Advanced paid yearly it pays $3,588 plus 0.6% of $5M, which is $33,588 a year to Shopify. On Plus with a 3-year term it pays $27,600 plus 0.2%, which is $37,600, and $40,000 on a 1-year term. Advanced stays $4,012 a year cheaper than 3-year Plus at this volume. We follow this store through the calculator and the decision table below.

A launch credit Advanced earns and Plus doesn't

Shopify's pricing page lists "Earn 1% back on all sales" on Advanced at "Up to $7,000 USD" and "Not included" on Plus. Basic ("Up to $3,500 USD") and Grow ("Up to $5,000 USD") get it too, with lower caps. The promotion terms (last updated Dec 2, 2025) say it is invitation-only, runs for "6 months, beginning on the date you first select a Qualifying Plan", pays "1% back on all transactions processed through Shopify Payments" and "0.5% back on all non-Shopify Payments transactions", and is credited toward subscription fees. Those terms give the Advanced maximum as "$10,000 (USD)", which doesn't match the pricing page's $7,000.

Because it is invitation-only, applies for six months from when a new store first picks Basic, Grow or Advanced (within 30 days of creating the store) and pays out as fee credit rather than cash, we left it out of the calculator. If you're launching and you've been invited, it is one more point in Advanced's favor for the first year. Check your own offer.

Shopify Plus pricing: what's published and what isn't

Shopify publishes the Plus floor price and the price per term, but no rate or starting revenue for the variable fee that higher-volume stores may pay. Shopify's pricing page shows Plus "Starts at $2,300 USD/mo" and says "If you choose a 1- or 3-year Plus subscription, you can cancel when your term commitment expires." It doesn't print separate prices per term.

Those are on Shopify's Help Center page on the Plus plan, which lists "$2,500 USD" a month on a 1-year term and "$2,300 USD" on a 3-year term, and in Shopify's own Plus vs Advanced post, published October 24, 2026: "Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month with a three-year term or $2,500 per month with a one-year term." The same post says "More complex, higher-volume businesses may pay a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model," "The fee differs for B2B and direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales," and "Shopify doesn't publish a revenue level at which variable pricing begins."

So three Plus numbers are missing from every Shopify page we read on 2026-10-26:

  • The variable platform fee rate, and whether it replaces the $2,300 or adds to it.
  • The revenue level where it starts.
  • The price of a store beyond the 9 free expansion stores. The pricing page lists "Up to 9" and no price for a tenth.

You'll find rates and thresholds for the variable fee on agency blogs. Shopify doesn't confirm them, so we didn't use them. The calculator sets the variable fee to zero and says so, which makes its Plus cost a floor: if you're quoted a variable fee, Plus costs more than our figures and the break-even moves up.

Shopify's own post also gives break-even revenue for moving from a lower plan up to Advanced, and says those figures aren't thresholds for moving from Advanced to Plus. That second calculation is the one below.

At what revenue does Plus pay for itself? (the break-even calculator)

On a third-party gateway, Plus on a 3-year term pays for itself at $6.0M a year against Advanced paid yearly, and at $6.6M on a 1-year term. The logic is one division: the yearly license gap divided by the fee saving. Plus saves 0.4 points (0.6% minus 0.2%, using the rates on Shopify's UK and Canada pages, which we assume also apply in the US) on every dollar through a third-party gateway, and the license gap is $24,012 a year on a 3-year term, so $24,012 divided by 0.004 is $6.0M.

This covers platform and transaction fees only. It leaves out apps you'd drop or add, developer time (priced in our Shopify developer cost guide), Plus-only build work, POS Pro fees if you run retail locations, and any effect on conversion.

Case A: third-party gateway

ComparisonLicense gap per yearBreak-even sales per year
Plus 3-year vs Advanced yearly$24,012$6.00M
Plus 1-year vs Advanced yearly$26,412$6.60M
Plus 3-year vs Advanced monthly$22,812$5.70M
Plus 1-year vs Advanced monthly$25,212$6.30M

Below these sales levels Advanced is cheaper on fees, and above them Plus is. At $10M a year through a gateway, 3-year Plus costs $15,988 less than Advanced paid yearly. At $20M the difference is $55,988. Our $5M store sits below every break-even in the table. The script and its unedited output are near the end of this post.

Case B: Shopify Payments in the US

With Shopify Payments neither plan pays a third-party fee, so the only possible saving is a lower card rate on Plus. Shopify's US pricing page doesn't print the Plus rate (or the Advanced one), so we can't compute a break-even. What the script can compute is the card-rate cut Plus would have to give you to cover the license gap:

Sales per yearCut needed, 3-year PlusCut needed, 1-year Plus
$2M1.20 points1.32 points
$5M0.48 points0.53 points
$10M0.24 points0.26 points
$20M0.12 points0.13 points

It assumes the same fixed per-transaction fee on both plans. For our $5M store, a Plus quote has to beat its Advanced card rate by at least 0.48 points (3-year term) just to break even on fees. Put the quoted Plus rate next to your current Advanced rate and compare the gap with this table.

Case C: the UK, where both rates are printed

The UK pricing page prints both card rates, so there the Shopify Payments case can be computed. Plus "Starts at £1,800 GBP/mo" (the page doesn't state the term, so treat the UK figures as a floor-price comparison) against Advanced at "£259 GBP/mo" paid yearly, and the online card rate gap is 0.20 points. Card savings alone cover the license gap at £9.25M a year in online card sales. On a third-party gateway the UK break-even is £4.62M. In-person card rates are the same on both plans in the UK ("1.5% + 0p GBP"), so in-person sales add nothing.

What the variable fee would do

Section D of the script output (near the end of this post) tests made-up variable fees, not Shopify figures. With a 0.10% fee on all sales, the 3-year gateway break-even moves from $6.0M to $8.0M, and with 0.20% to about $12.0M. At 0.40% the fee saving is gone and Plus never pays for itself on fees. That's why the variable fee is the first thing to get in writing.

Shopify Plus vs Advanced features: what only Plus does

Plus changes what you can build in three places: custom checkout logic, checkout steps and multi-store or multi-catalog selling. Most of the other rows are bigger limits on things Advanced already has. Every row below was read on 2026-10-26.

On API limits, Shopify's pricing page says "Up to 10x on select APIs" for Plus and "Up to 2x on select APIs" for Advanced, both measured against the "Standard" limit on Basic and Grow. Against Advanced the GraphQL Admin gap is 5x (200 to 1,000 points per second), the same figures our Shopify Black Friday checklist uses for its capacity math. Shopify's post adds that Plus "can request higher limits through Shopify Support." If a sync job hits Advanced's limit, batching and bulk operations are usually cheaper than $24,012 a year.

Headless is possible on both plans: Advanced gets 1 headless storefront, Plus gets 25. Whether you should go headless at all is a separate question, covered in our Hydrogen cost and trade-offs guide.

Checkout after Scripts: what you can build on Advanced

You can run custom discount, delivery, payment and validation logic on Advanced, as long as it comes from a public App Store app. Shopify's Functions docs say "Stores on any plan can use public apps that are distributed through the Shopify App Store and contain functions" and "Only stores on a Shopify Plus plan can use custom apps that contain Shopify Function APIs." They also note that "some Shopify Functions capabilities are available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan."

Scripts no longer factor in. Shopify's changelog set April 15, 2026 as the end of editing and publishing, and on June 30, 2026 "All Shopify Scripts will cease to execute entirely." A Plus store that relied on Scripts has already had to rebuild that logic as Functions or apps, so "Plus for Scripts" is no longer a reason to upgrade.

What stays Plus-only on the checkout itself: "Checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping, and payment steps are available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan" (checkout UI extensions docs). After the purchase, Shopify's checkout extensions docs say "Extensions that appear after a purchase has been completed will be available to all plans except Shopify Starter," so Thank you and Order status page extensions work on Advanced.

So before you upgrade for checkout reasons, ask two questions:

  1. Does a public app already do this logic? If yes, it runs on Advanced. Our Shopify Functions guide maps each old Script type to its Function API and lists the plan notes per API.
  2. Does the change have to appear on the information, shipping or payment step? If yes, that's Plus. If it can live on the Thank you or Order status page, it can't justify the upgrade. Our checkout extensibility guide covers what non-Plus stores can build there.

For our $5M store, a tiered wholesale discount from an App Store app keeps it on Advanced. A custom Function, or a field on the shipping step, needs Plus.

B2B and selling internationally on Advanced

Advanced runs Shopify B2B with up to 3 catalogs, and it has no expansion stores. Plus has unlimited catalogs and up to 9 free expansion stores, according to Shopify's pricing page.

The catalog limit is the one that bites first for wholesale. Three catalogs cover, say, a retail-wholesale split plus one distributor tier. If you price by customer group, by region and by contract, you'll run out, and that's a feature you can name, which is the right reason to upgrade.

Expansion stores matter when you need separate stores rather than one store selling into several markets, for example separate brands, separate legal entities or a separate wholesale store. Shopify's pricing page lists the same "Sell globally" features on Advanced and Plus: translating your storefront, localized selling with Shopify Markets, local domains, estimating and collecting duties and taxes, and local currencies and payment methods (those two require Shopify Payments). So selling into several markets from one store doesn't need Plus on its own; separate stores do.

When to upgrade to Shopify Plus, and when to stay on Advanced

Is Shopify Plus worth it? Yes when you need one of its features, or when you send roughly $6M or more a year through a third-party gateway (3-year term). Otherwise Advanced is cheaper on the license and transaction fees Shopify publishes for US stores, unless you pay for POS Pro in many retail locations.

If your situation is...Then
You need a custom app with Shopify Functions (no public app fits)Plus
You need checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping or payment stepPlus
You need more than 3 B2B catalogsPlus
You need separate stores (brands, entities, wholesale)Plus, up to 9 expansion stores free
You need more than 15 staff accounts or more than 10 inventory locationsPlus
You pay for POS Pro in many retail locationsCheck Plus: Advanced pays $89 a month per location ($21,360 a year for 20), and Plus includes 20
Third-party gateway, about $6M or more a year (3-year term)Plus pays for itself on fees alone, before any variable fee
Third-party gateway, well under $6M a year, no Plus-only featureAdvanced
Shopify Payments in the US, no Plus-only featureAdvanced, unless a written Plus card rate beats yours by the cut in Case B
Your checkout logic is available in a public appAdvanced
You want Plus "for Scripts"Not a reason anymore: Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026
You're launching and were invited to the Advanced rewards promotionAdvanced for the first six months at least

Plus is the wrong choice for a store buying it as a status upgrade: its checkout or discount need is already covered by a public app, its sales are well under the gateway break-even, and it isn't hitting any named limit. That store pays at least $22,812 a year ($24,012 against Advanced paid yearly) for headroom it doesn't use.

For our hypothetical $5M store: on a third-party gateway it's $4,012 a year cheaper on Advanced (3-year Plus), on Shopify Payments it needs a Plus card rate at least 0.48 points under its current one, and its discount runs from a public app. It stays on Advanced until it needs a fourth B2B catalog, a custom Function or a shipping-step extension.

Like everything in the calculator, the output covers platform and transaction fees only, uses the published floor price for Plus and treats the variable fee as zero. It is a snapshot of Shopify's prices on 2026-10-26.

What Shopify doesn't publish (ask before you sign)

These answers decide the real cost of Plus, and none of them were on a Shopify page we read on 2026-10-26. Ask Shopify sales for each in writing:

  • US Plus card rate. "What are my online and in-person card rates on Plus, and what are they on Advanced?" Compare the gap with the Case B table.
  • Variable platform fee. "Will I pay a variable platform fee, at what rate, from what revenue, and does it replace the $2,300 or add to it? Is it lower on a 3-year term, and what rate applies to B2B and to direct-to-consumer sales?"
  • A cap on the variable fee. "Is there a maximum monthly fee?"
  • Stores beyond the 9 included. "What does a tenth store cost?"
  • Downgrading. "If I move back to Advanced when my term ends, what happens to my expansion stores, custom apps with Functions and B2B catalogs beyond three?" Shopify's pricing page only says you "can cancel when your term commitment expires."
  • Switching. "Does moving to Plus change anything on my existing store, and how long does the switch take?"

Then put the answers into the script's constants and run it again. If the quoted variable fee plus 0.2% is at or above 0.6%, Plus can't win on fees through a gateway at any volume, and the decision is purely about features.

If you've hit one of the limits above and want to know whether the work fits on Advanced with an app or needs Plus, our Shopify e-commerce team can scope both paths. For what developer time costs on top of either plan, see our Shopify developer cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Shopify Plus and Shopify Advanced?

Plus costs more and lets you build more. On Shopify's published prices, Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term against $299 a month for Advanced paid yearly, a $24,012 a year gap. Plus cuts the third-party transaction fee from 0.6% to 0.2% (the rates printed on Shopify's UK and Canada pages), allows custom apps with Shopify Functions and checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, and raises limits: up to 9 free expansion stores, unlimited B2B catalogs instead of 3, unlimited staff accounts instead of 15, 200 inventory locations instead of 10, and 1,000 GraphQL Admin API points per second instead of 200.

Is Shopify Plus worth it?

Usually for a feature, rarely for fees. On Shopify's published fees, Plus on a 3-year term ($2,300 a month) costs $24,012 a year more than Advanced paid yearly ($299 a month), and its lower third-party transaction fee (0.2% against 0.6%, the rates Shopify prints on its UK and Canada pages; the US page doesn't print them) only covers that gap at about $6.0M a year in sales through a third-party gateway. With Shopify Payments in the US, Shopify doesn't publish the Plus card rate, so get a written rate before you decide. Plus is worth it sooner if you need something Advanced can't do: custom apps with Shopify Functions, checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, expansion stores, unlimited B2B catalogs or more than 15 staff accounts.

How much is Shopify Plus per month?

Shopify's pricing page says Plus starts at $2,300 USD a month. Shopify's Help Center page on the Plus plan and its own Plus vs Advanced post (October 24, 2026) add the terms: $2,300 a month on a three-year term or $2,500 a month on a one-year term. Higher-volume businesses may pay a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model, Shopify says it differs for B2B and direct-to-consumer sales, and it doesn't publish the revenue level where that fee begins. Advanced is $299 a month paid yearly or $399 paid monthly.

Does Shopify Plus have lower transaction fees?

Yes, if you use a third-party payment provider: Shopify's UK and Canada pricing pages list a third-party transaction fee of 0.2% on Plus against 0.6% on Advanced. With Shopify Payments there is no third-party fee on either plan, and the difference is the card rate. Shopify's UK page prints both (Plus 1.3% + 25p, Advanced 1.5% + 25p online), and its Canada page lists 2.15% + 30¢ against 2.4% + 30¢. The US pricing page prints no card rate for either plan.

Can I use Shopify Functions on Advanced?

Yes, through public apps. Shopify's Functions docs say stores on any plan can use public apps from the Shopify App Store that contain functions, and only Shopify Plus stores can use custom apps that contain Shopify Function APIs. So on Advanced, check whether an App Store app already does your discount, delivery, payment or validation logic before you upgrade to have a custom one built.

How many stores do I get on Shopify Plus?

Shopify's pricing page lists up to 9 free expansion stores on Plus and none on Advanced. The pricing page we read on October 26, 2026 doesn't state what a store beyond those costs, so ask Shopify sales for that price in writing if you expect to need more.

Can I do B2B on Shopify Advanced?

Yes, within a limit. Shopify's pricing page lists Shopify B2B on Basic, Grow and Advanced with up to 3 catalogs, and unlimited catalogs on Plus. If your wholesale pricing fits in three catalogs, Advanced can run it. If you need a catalog per customer group or per region beyond three, that limit is one of the clearer reasons to move to Plus.

Can I move back from Shopify Plus to Advanced?

Shopify's pricing page says that if you choose a 1- or 3-year Plus subscription, you can cancel when your term commitment expires. We didn't find a Shopify page that says what happens to expansion stores, custom apps with Functions or B2B catalogs beyond three when a store moves back to Advanced, so ask Shopify sales for that in writing before you sign.
